Our History

Since 1959, the Pender Island Chamber of Commerce has evolved alongside our community, supporting local businesses and helping shape our economic future.

Chamber Origins

Global Roots, Local Impact

The first Chamber of Commerce was founded in Marseille, France in 1599, created to support merchants and strengthen local trade. The concept spread across Europe and to North America, where one of the earliest chambers formed in New York City in 1768.

Today, this long-standing tradition continues in communities like the Southern Gulf Islands, where local chambers play an essential role in supporting small businesses, promoting sustainable tourism, and fostering community collaboration. The Pender Island Chamber of Commerce proudly carries forward this legacy, championing the economic vitality and unique character of our island community.

Our Beginnings

1959-1987

The Pender Island Chamber of Commerce was originally established in 1959 under the federal Board of Trades Act. Its founding mandate was “to promote and improve trade and commerce and the economic, civic, and social welfare of the district.” This vision reflected the community spirit and entrepreneurial drive that have always defined Pender Island. In 1987, the Chamber reinforced this purpose with a bylaw update, affirming its commitment to local economic and social development.

Renewal & Growth

1990s-2001

Like many small community organizations, the Chamber faced challenges during the 1990s. Recognizing the need for a unified voice for local businesses, a group of community members revived the organization in 2000. In 2001, the bylaws were modernized and the mission refreshed to better reflect the collaborative spirit of the business community: “for Local Businesses to work together to promote each other and the Pender Islands.”

Today & Beyond

The Chamber has continued to grow and adapt, now representing about 120 members across a wide range of industries. In 2023, the Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan, reflecting both the organization’s maturity and its renewed sense of purpose. From its humble beginnings in 1959 to today, the Pender Island Chamber of Commerce has remained dedicated to fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and connected island economy.
